But because they are used in your most sensitive areas, it is very important that they be fresh and clean for each use. Good storage and maintenance will prolong the life of your sex toys and provide you lots of pleasure and fun.

First things first
The first thing you want to do after receiving your new toy is to check for any imperfections that may cause problems, such as rough seams, tears or discolorations. If you have purchased a glass or acrylic product, check for cracks.

Put in the required batteries to be sure there are no electrical issues that will cause your toy to malfunction. Once you are satisfied that your toy is in good shape and working order, follow these basic guidelines for continued use of your toy.

  • Clean your toys thoroughly before and after use. After washing, ensure that each toy is completely dry before storing to prevent the growth of mold or mildew.
  • Use a disinfectant spray or disinfectant after each wash. Allow to air dry.
  • Remove batteries when not in use to prevent corrosion.
  • Wrap each toy in a soft cloth or toy bag as some toys cause others to melt or discolor when in direct contact. In particular, wrap bullet or egg vibrators separately from the rest of your toys.
  • Store toys in a cool dark place such as a drawer as sunlight and heat may cause some toys to melt or discolor. Don’t expose them to extreme cold either, such as a refrigerator, as most toys – except those made of glass, acrylic and silicone, if without batteries – can be damaged by extreme cold.

Types of Toys

Silicone-Non-porous, hypoallergenic and easy to clean. Silicone can tear easily. All toys made out of silicone (and don’t have batteries or electrical parts) can be sterilized. Waterproof silicone toys can be boiled in water for up to three minutes. They can also be washed in the top rack of a dishwasher. Or you can disinfect silicone toys by simply washing them with toy cleaner or with water and mild soap, letting them air dry. Silicone products must be used with water-based lubricants (using a silicone based lube with a silicone toy can destroy the toys surface.)

Hard plastic, latex and vinyl-These toys are not as porous as rubber ones and do not have to be used with condoms. To clean these types of toys, simply wash them with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly and air dry. Don’t use any oils on latex toys as this can destroy the toys surface.  

Rubber toys-These types of toys can be difficult to clean, so it’s recommended that condoms are used on them. To clean, wash with mild soap and water. Make sure you thoroughly rinse all the soap off your toys because the soap can degrade the material and irritate your sensitive areas. Air dry your rubber toys. Do not use oils with jelly rubber toys because they will damage the surface.

Acrylic-These types of toys are non-porous and are easy to clean. Simply wash with mild soap and water, rinse well and dry with a clean cloth. These toys can also be boiled or submerged in hot water if there are no electrical parts or batteries.

Cyberskin (And other realistic materials)-This type of material is extremely porous and can get dirty easily. Condoms are recommended to be used with Cyberskin products. To clean, wash with mild soap and water, rinse well and pat dry with a clean cloth. To increase the toy’s lifespan, dust with cornstarch before storing it. Avoid using talcum powder (it’s been linked to cervical cancer.) Cyberskin is eroded by contact with oils, silicone-based lubricants and other rubber-toys.

Glass-These toys can be washed with warm water and anti-bacterial soap. To sterilize, simply take a cotton ball soaked in pure alcohol to wipe down your toy, then rinse thoroughly. Glass toys can be submerged in hot or boiling water, if there are no electrical parts or batteries.

Elastomer-This material cannot be disinfected. Wash with soap and water and allow to dry completely.

Antibacterial soaps-Special antibacterial toy cleaners are available. There are many types of antibacterial cleaners made specifically for your type of toy. Dilute the cleaning liquid with warm water (or follow your specific toys cleaners instructions). Wash with a cloth, rinse well and dry with paper towels or a soft, lint-free cloth. Clean toys with antibacterial toy disinfectant both before and after use. Waterproof toys should be rinsed with hot water after using them in the water. Be sure not to get the toys battery compartments or electrical parts wet. Always allow your toy to dry thoroughly before storing, as bacteria thrives on wet surfaces.
